What's on this sheet

Across changes x and up changes y, separately and independently. That is genuinely all of it, and it makes translation the right place to start with transformations: a child can get every question right by counting squares, and while they are counting they are building the habit of reading a coordinate pair as two separate instructions.

Why this sheet works

The signs are what turn it from counting into arithmetic. Left is a negative move in x and down is a negative move in y, so a point at (2, 5) moved three left and four down lands at (−1, 1). Counting on the grid and calculating should agree, and doing both is how a child learns to trust the calculation.

  1. Start where the point is: (1, −5). The move is 1 left and 5 up, and the question is only where those two numbers end up.
  2. Sliding changes each coordinate on its own. Across, it moves 1 left: 1 − 1 = 0. Up, it moves 5 up: −5 + 5 = 0.
  3. So it lands on (0, 0).
