The first-quadrant midpoint sheets keep both points positive, where averaging is a friendly halving. This one uses all four quadrants, so a coordinate is often the average of a negative and a positive: the midpoint of (−5, 1) and (−1, −5) is found by halving −6 to get −3, then halving −4 to get −2 — and getting those signs right is the work this version adds.
The two coordinates are averaged one at a time, and doing them separately is what stops a child swapping an x for a y. Every step-by-step walk here does the x's on their own line and the y's on the next, which is also the habit that survives when the numbers turn negative.
