What's on this sheet

The third is the whole difference from the cylinder, and it is worth showing rather than stating: a cone poured into a cylinder of the same base and height fills it in exactly three goes. A child who has seen that does not forget which way the fraction goes.

Why this sheet works

The radius-or-diameter decision matters here for the same reason it does on a cylinder, and slightly more — there is now a third to keep track of as well. Each figure names its measurement, and a sheet can be set to one kind or left mixed.

1177.5 ÷ 3 =392.5 cubic cm
  1. Same idea as a box: the area of the base times how tall it is. Here the base is a circle, and that is the only difference.
  2. The circle's area is π × r × r = 3.14 × 5 × 5 = 78.5 square cm.
  3. Times the height: 78.5 × 15 = 1177.5 cubic cm. That is the CYLINDER it fits inside, not the cone yet.
  4. Now the part that gets forgotten. Exactly THREE cones fill the cylinder they sit inside — it is a fact about cones, not a number bolted onto a formula. So take a third: 1177.5 ÷ 3 = 392.5 cubic cm.
