Fractions on a number line worksheets

A number line shows a fraction as a distance, not a piece of pie — the idea that unlocks comparing and adding later. These free printable worksheets name points and plot fractions on a 0–1 line.

What's on this sheet

One skill marks a point and asks which fraction it lands on; the other gives a fraction and asks the child to mark it. The line is divided into equal parts so the denominator is visible, and the numerator counts the jumps from zero. Choose how many parts the line is split into to set the difficulty.

Why this sheet works

Seeing a fraction as a position, not a shaded shape, is what makes 3/4 > 2/3 obvious later.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

3/4 on a number line

gaps:4marks:5
each gap:
each gap:
gaps counted:3
  1. Count the GAPS between the marks, not the marks. A line cut into 4 has 5 marks on it — counting those gives 5, and the answer comes out wrong in a way that still looks like a fraction.
  2. 4 gaps between 0 and 1, so each one is a quarter — that is the bottom number.
  3. Then count gaps from 0 to the mark: 3. So it is 3/4.
