17/5 means seventeen fifths, and five fifths make one whole. Three wholes uses fifteen of them and two are left over, so the answer is 3 2/5. Said that way it is a division with a remainder, which is a thing a child already knows how to do — the quotient becomes the whole number and the remainder stays over the same denominator.
Why this sheet works
The denominator never changes, and that is the fact worth repeating. Fifths go in and fifths come out; only how they are grouped is different. Children who lose track of it end up dividing the bottom number too, which produces an answer that cannot be checked against anything.

- That is a division, and it is the only arithmetic in the question: 8 ÷ 3 = 2, with 2 left over.
- The 2 is whole ones and the 2 left over is still thirds — the leftovers never change size. So 8/3 = 2 and 2/3.
