Dilations, step by step

A dilation is the transformation that changes size.

The question
(2, 0)by scale factor ½ ()

(2, 0) by scale factor ½

(2, 0)
2 × ½=1
0 × ½=0
(2, 0)(1, 0)
  1. Start where the point is: (2, 0). The move is by scale factor ½, and the question is only where those two numbers end up.
  2. A dilation from the center O does not turn or flip — it SCALES. Multiply each coordinate by ½: 2 × ½ = 1, and 0 × ½ = 0.
  3. So it lands on (1, 0) — the same direction from O, half as far out.

How it works.

  1. 01

Start where the point is: (2, 0). The move is by scale factor ½, and the question is only where those two numbers end up.

  2. 02

    A dilation from the center O does not turn or flip — it SCALES. Multiply each coordinate by ½: 2 × ½ = 1, and 0 × ½ = 0.

  3. 03

So it lands on (1, 0) — the same direction from O, half as far out.
