Dividing decimals, step by step

Dividing a decimal by a whole number keeps the point exactly where it is.

The question

19.24 ÷ 2

19.24÷2
19.24÷2=9.62
9.62×2=19.24
  1. The number you are dividing by is already whole, so there is nothing to move: divide as usual and the point in the answer comes straight down.
  2. Now divide: 19.24 ÷ 2 = 9.62.
  3. Check it the other way round: 9.62 × 2 should give 19.24 back. A point in the wrong place fails this instantly — 19.24 and a tenth of it are not close.

How it works.

  1. 01

The number you are dividing by is already whole, so there is nothing to move: divide as usual and the point in the answer comes straight down.

  2. 02

    Now divide: 19.24 ÷ 2 = 9.62.

  3. 03

Check it the other way round: 9.62 × 2 should give 19.24 back. A point in the wrong place fails this instantly — 19.24 and a tenth of it are not close.
