Mixed numbers to improper fractions, step by step
Turning 3 1/4 into 13/4 is the conversion every fraction calculation needs sooner or later.

- 1 and 3/7 is two different kinds of thing written side by side — whole ones, and sevenths. To write it as ONE fraction they all have to be counted in the same size of piece.
- One whole is 7 sevenths, so 1 wholes is 1 × 7 = 7 of them.
- Add the 3 that was already there: 7 + 3 = 10. The bottom never moved — they are still sevenths — so 1 3/7 = 10/7.
