What's on this test

87 × 53 is not one skill. It is a times-table fact, a place-value shift, and a column addition, run four times and stacked — which is why a child can know every table and still get it wrong. The usual failure is the second partial product: the row for the tens digit has to start one column left, and a row written flush right is a right answer added in the wrong place.

How the paper is put together

The word problems are short on purpose. They are not there to test reading; they are there to check that a child reaches for multiplication at all when the sentence says "each" — the step that a page of pre-set columns never asks for.
