2-digit by 1-digit multiplication, step by step

A single-digit multiplier is the gentlest way into written multiplication.

The question

22 × 7

22 7 154
  1. 22 × 7, set out in columns. Multiply one place at a time, starting at the ones on the RIGHT.
  2. The ones: 2 × 7 = 14. Write the 4 and carry the 1.
  3. The tens: 2 × 7 = 14, and the 1 carried over makes 15. Nothing further to carry into, so all of 15 is written down.
  4. So 22 × 7 = 154.
