What's on this sheet

With one digit on the bottom, the whole calculation is a single row: multiply that digit by each digit of the top number in turn. What is new compared with the times tables is the carry. Six sevens are forty-two, so the 2 is written and the 4 carries into the tens; six fours are twenty-four, plus the carried four makes twenty-eight, and 47 × 6 is 282.

Why this sheet works

The mistake to watch for is adding the carried digit before multiplying instead of after. In 47 × 6 the four is carried, then six fours are found, then the four is added — multiply first, carry second. Keeping that order straight here, on a single easy row, is what makes the longer sheets manageable later.
