The row works exactly as it did for a two-digit top, one column further. In 316 × 8, eight sixes are forty-eight — write 8, carry 4; eight ones are eight, plus the carried four is twelve — write 2, carry 1; eight threes are twenty-four, plus one is twenty-five, giving 2528. The thing to notice is that a small product can still carry once the running carry is added, so the carrying does not stop after the ones.
Why this sheet works
A zero in the middle is where children slip. In 305 × 8 the tens digit is zero, but eight zeros are not simply dropped — the four carried from the ones still lands there, so the column reads four, not nothing. Sizing the sheet by digit count guarantees a genuine three-digit factor, so these hundreds-place cases actually turn up instead of hiding behind smaller numbers.

- The ones: 3 × 9 = 27. Write the 7 and carry the 2.
- The tens: 7 × 9 = 63, and the 2 carried over makes 65. Write the 5 and carry the 6.
- The hundreds: 3 × 9 = 27, and the 6 carried over makes 33. Nothing further to carry into, so all of 33 is written down.
