What's on this test

Fifth grade finishes the two number systems a child has been building since grade three and adds the rule that governs both. Fractions and decimals get a section each because they go wrong differently: a fraction error is usually about the denominator, a decimal error is almost always about where the point went.

How the paper is put together

Order of operations is last and it is the section that predicts algebra. Up to now a line of arithmetic has been read left to right and that has worked; from here it does not, and a child who evaluates 5 + 8 × 6 as 78 will carry that reading into every expression they meet next year. Five questions is enough to tell whether the rule is known or merely heard.
