What's on this sheet

A table hands its rate over to anyone who divides. Take any y and the x sitting above it, divide, and that is how much y moves for every one x — do it on both tables and the larger number is the faster relationship. The trap is reading the biggest y on the page instead: a table that reaches 60 can still be the slower of the two.

Why this sheet works

Because the two tables can start from different x values, the safe move is a division rather than a glance down the column. A column that steps by one lets a child read the rate by subtraction and never notice the step; a column that steps by three does not, and a child who skips the division reads the wrong number off it.

  1. These two are written in different ways, so there is nothing to compare yet — the numbers on the page are not the same kind of number. Turn each one into a rate PER ONE week first, and do not look at which looks bigger until you have.
  2. A: any column divided by its own x — 60 ÷ 4 = 15. So A is 15 dollars per week.
  3. B: the number in front of x, which is already a rate per one week: 13. So B is 13 dollars per week.
  4. Now they can be compared: A is 15 and B is 13 per week, so A is greater.
