3x means three times x, so it comes apart by dividing both sides by three — x = 7. x ÷ 4 = 3 is the mirror: x was divided by four, so multiply both sides by four to get x = 12. Both are the same idea, an inverse operation applied to both sides, and meeting them together is what stops a child from reaching for subtraction out of habit.

  1. x was DIVIDED by 8. To get back to x on its own, undo it — and the undo of dividing is multiplying.
  2. Multiply BOTH sides by 8. The left becomes just x; the right becomes 5 × 8 = 40.
  3. Check it: 40 ÷ 8 = 5, which is what the question said. So x = 40.
