What's on this sheet

The constant is a division: y ÷ x, worked from any column of the table. Where 2 costs 24 and 5 costs 60, the constant is 12 — the amount for one — and every column agrees because a proportional table is exactly one that does. Each table here is built so that division lands on a whole number, so the reasoning stays visible instead of being buried under long division.

Why this sheet works

A single column can lie, and checking a second is the habit these sheets train. A table where 2 gives 24 but 5 gives 55 is not proportional at all, and a child who reads k off the first row alone would never notice. The constant has to hold all the way across, and confirming it is the difference between finding a pattern and testing one.

  1. In a proportional table every y is its x times the SAME number — the constant of proportionality. Find it by dividing a y by its own x.
  2. Take the first column: 6 ÷ 3 = 2.
  3. Check another column so it is not a fluke: 14 ÷ 7 = 2. Every column gives 2, so the constant is 2.
