Solving (x − h)² = k by square roots, step by step

The question

Solve (x + 5)² = 9 by taking square roots.

x + 5 = ±3

  1. Take the square root of both sides. Two different numbers square to the same thing — 3 × 3 and (−3) × (−3) both give 9 — so the square root question has TWO answers, and writing only the positive one loses half of it. So x + 5 = ±√9 = ±3.
  2. Then subtract 5 from both sides: x = −5 ± 3.
  3. So x = −2 or x = −8 — both roots.
