What's on this test

Rounding is taught as a rule about the digit to the right, and tested as though that rule were the point. It is not: rounding earns its place because it makes an estimate, and an estimate is how a child catches their own wrong answer. That is why the columns follow it on this paper rather than sitting on a sheet of their own.

How the paper is put together

The pairing gives a question worth asking after marking: was the column answer anywhere near the rounded one? A child who rounds well, computes badly, and never notices the gap has two separate skills and no bridge between them — which is the thing most worth knowing at this stage.
