What's on this sheet

This is the one thing the slope and intercept sheets stop short of. Slope finds m on its own; an intercept sheet finds where a line crosses an axis. Writing the equation is putting both into y = mx + b — a real two-step from two points: the slope is (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁), and then a point goes back in to solve b = y − mx. Every step-by-step walk here shows the slope found first and the intercept backed out, because a child who stops at the slope has half an answer.

Why this sheet works

Two levels build the skill. The first gives the slope and one point, so the only work is the y-intercept — one signed subtraction. The second gives two points, so the slope has to be found before the intercept can be. Both come out to whole numbers on purpose: a fractional slope needs an answer pad that can write a/b, which is a separate sheet.

Write the equation of the line with slope 1 through (−2, 2)

m = 1
b = 2 − (1)(−2)=4
y = x + 4
  1. The slope is given: m = 1. Now find where the line crosses the y-axis.
  2. Put a point back in to find b: b = y − mx = 2 − (1)(−2) = 4.
  3. Write it as y = mx + b: y = x + 4.
