Asked for the slope of y = 3x + 5, a child has a one-in-two chance of guessing right, which is why these sheets are built around what each number MEANS rather than where it sits. The number attached to x says how much y moves for every step of x; the number on its own is where the line already is before x has moved at all.

Why this sheet works

Three questions turn up on every sheet because they are the three readings that go wrong. y = x + 4 has an invisible 1 in front of the x, and a child who answers 4 has made exactly the mistake it produces. y = 3 has no x at all, which is a flat line and a slope of 0, not "no line". y = 3x has no constant, which is an intercept of 0, not "no intercept".

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

y = 5x − 4

  1. A line written this way carries two facts: how much y moves for each step of x, and where it already is when x is 0. The slope is the first.
  2. The number multiplying x is 5, so each step of x moves y by 5.
  3. So m = 5, and the −4 is where it starts rather than how it climbs.
