What's on this sheet

Counting by fives does the heavy lifting. To solve 45 ÷ 5, count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and notice you said nine numbers — so the answer is 9. It is the same rhythm as reading a clock's minutes.

Why this sheet works

Place value offers a shortcut: dividing by 5 is the same as dividing by 10 and then doubling. Take 40 ÷ 5 — split off the zero to get 4, double it, and you have 8. The fact family always backs it up, since 40 ÷ 5 = 8 because 5 × 8 = 40.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

40 ÷ 5

40÷5
5×?=40
5×8=40
40÷5=8
8×5=40
  1. 40 ÷ 5 means sharing 40 out equally between 5. Deal them round one at a time until they run out; the answer is how many end up in one share.
  2. Dealing out 40 one at a time works, and takes all day. The shortcut is the same fact read backwards: 5 shares of WHAT makes 40?
  3. 5 × 8 = 40. That is the one, so 40 ÷ 5 = 8.
  4. Worth checking, because it costs one multiplication: 8 × 5 = 40. It matches, so the answer holds.
