What's on this sheet

Halve first, then divide by 3. 42 ÷ 6 becomes 42 ÷ 2 = 21, then 21 ÷ 3 = 7. Both halves of that are moves a child already owns by the time the sixes arrive, which is why this table is far less work than its position in the grid suggests.

Why this sheet works

The fact family is the other route and the faster one once the times table is secure: 54 ÷ 6 = 9 because 6 × 9 = 54. Locking a page to the divisor 6 is what turns the two-step method into the one-step recall.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

42 ÷ 6

42÷6
6×?=42
6×7=42
42÷6=7
7×6=42
  1. 42 ÷ 6 means sharing 42 out equally between 6. Deal them round one at a time until they run out; the answer is how many end up in one share.
  2. Dealing out 42 one at a time works, and takes all day. The shortcut is the same fact read backwards: 6 shares of WHAT makes 42?
  3. 6 × 7 = 42. That is the one, so 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
  4. Worth checking, because it costs one multiplication: 7 × 6 = 42. It matches, so the answer holds.
