What's on this sheet

Every multiple of nine up to 81 has digits that add to nine: 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81. That gives a child a way to be sure a division is going to come out whole before they start, which is a rarer kind of confidence than knowing the answer.

Why this sheet works

There is a second pattern hiding in the same list. For those dividends, the answer is one more than the tens digit: 45 has a 4, so the answer is 5; 63 has a 6, so the answer is 7. It works all the way to 81 ÷ 9 = 9, and it is the sort of thing a child enjoys checking for themselves.

  1. 45 ÷ 9 means sharing 45 out equally between 9. Deal them round one at a time until they run out; the answer is how many end up in one share.
  2. Dealing out 45 one at a time works, and takes all day. The shortcut is the same fact read backwards: 9 shares of WHAT makes 45?
  3. 9 × 5 = 45. That is the one, so 45 ÷ 9 = 5.
  4. Worth checking, because it costs one multiplication: 5 × 9 = 45. It matches, so the answer holds.
