What's on this sheet
Nothing is shaded, and that is the difference between this page and the one next to it. Shade a piece and the question becomes “what fraction is shaded” — the same paper with the top number fixed at one. With the shape left plain there is no piece to point at, so the only way through is to read the cutting: six equal pieces means each one is a sixth.
Why this sheet works
The answer is always a unit fraction, and that is the grade’s point rather than a simplification. 1/6 is the quantity a third-grader is meeting for the first time, and every other fraction is built out of copies of it — 5/6 is five of them. A child who can name one piece can name the rest.
