Bar graphs counting by 2s worksheets

A scale of 2 is the first time a bar graph stops being a counting exercise. These free printable worksheets mark each gridline as 2, so a child has to read the axis before reading the bars.

The answer key prints on a separate page.

What's on this sheet

The usual mistake is counting gridlines and writing that number down. A bar that reaches the fifth line is worth 10 on this scale, and a child who has only met graphs marked in ones will write 5. Every value on these graphs is a multiple of 2, so reading the axis is enough and no bar stops between lines.

Why this sheet works

Once the bars are read, the questions are ordinary subtraction and addition: how many more, how many altogether. The two-step questions, such as how many more stars and moons together than hearts, are worth doing on scrap paper, since each one holds two separate answers.

How this one works

Stickers in each packet

key:1 = 2 stickers
Stars:1 up→2 stickers
Hearts:3 up→6 stickers
Moons:5 up→10 stickers
Suns:8 up→16 stickers
Stars:1 up→2 stickers
Hearts:3 up→6 stickers
Moons:5 up→10 stickers
Suns:8 up→16 stickers
8 stickers
  1. Check the key FIRST. One square stands for 2 stickers, not one — so counting squares up the axis gives you the wrong number unless you multiply.
  2. So multiply each row by 2: Stars has 1 × 2 = 2, Hearts has 3 × 2 = 6, Moons has 5 × 2 = 10, Suns has 8 × 2 = 16.
  3. Now the question, on the NUMBERS rather than the marks: Moons is 10 − 2 = 8 more than Stars. So the answer is 8 stickers.
