Bar graphs counting by 5s worksheets

With a scale of 5, the same bars stand for much bigger numbers. These free printable worksheets mark each gridline as 5, so reading a graph becomes skip counting and the totals climb past 100.

What's on this sheet

A bar graph with a scale of 5 is multiplication in disguise: a bar that reaches the eighth line is 8 × 5, or 40. Children can skip count their way up at first, and that is fine, because every value on these graphs lands exactly on a line and no bar has to be estimated.

Why this sheet works

The bigger numbers change the sums as well. A total such as 40 + 25 + 5 + 45 is real addition, so the how-many-altogether question takes more work here than it does on a graph marked in ones. Letting a child write the bar values beside the graph first keeps the reading and the adding apart.

How this one works

Stickers in each packet

key:1 = 5 stickers
Stars:8 up→40 stickers
Hearts:5 up→25 stickers
Moons:1 up→5 stickers
Suns:9 up→45 stickers
Stars:8 up→40 stickers
Hearts:5 up→25 stickers
Moons:1 up→5 stickers
Suns:9 up→45 stickers
35 stickers
  1. Check the key FIRST. One square stands for 5 stickers, not one — so counting squares up the axis gives you the wrong number unless you multiply.
  2. So multiply each row by 5: Stars has 8 × 5 = 40, Hearts has 5 × 5 = 25, Moons has 1 × 5 = 5, Suns has 9 × 5 = 45.
  3. Now the question, on the NUMBERS rather than the marks: Stars is 40 − 5 = 35 more than Moons. So the answer is 35 stickers.
