Picture graphs counting by 5s worksheets

When each symbol stands for 5, a picture graph is a times table with a picture on it. These free printable worksheets ask a child to read the key, count the symbols, and scale up, with an answer key to check.

What's on this sheet

The key is the question. A row of seven circles is 35 on these sheets, and a child who skips the key will answer 7 and feel sure about it. Reading the key out loud before anything else is the habit worth building, and the sheet gives plenty of chances, since every graph has its own questions.

Why this sheet works

Every row holds whole symbols, so each number is a multiple of 5 and there is no half-circle to interpret. For “how many fewer”, there are two good routes: compare the symbols and multiply once at the end, or work out both totals and subtract. Trying both on one question shows why they agree.

How this one works

Pets in our class

key:1 = 5 pets
Cats:2 drawn→10 pets
Dogs:5 drawn→25 pets
Fish:7 drawn→35 pets
Birds:10 drawn→50 pets
Cats:2 drawn→10 pets
Dogs:5 drawn→25 pets
Fish:7 drawn→35 pets
Birds:10 drawn→50 pets
Cats
  1. Check the key FIRST. One picture stands for 5 pets, not one — so counting pictures gives you the wrong number unless you multiply.
  2. So multiply each row by 5: Cats has 2 × 5 = 10, Dogs has 5 × 5 = 25, Fish has 7 × 5 = 35, Birds has 10 × 5 = 50.
  3. Now the question, on the NUMBERS rather than the marks: Cats (10). So the answer is Cats.
