What's on this sheet

Write the awkward number as a round number and a small correction, then multiply both parts. 99 × 8 = (100 − 1) × 8 = 800 − 8 = 792. 101 × 23 = (100 + 1) × 23 = 2300 + 23 = 2323. Every question on the page becomes a round multiplication and one subtraction or addition.

Why this sheet works

The step that goes wrong is forgetting to multiply the correction. (100 − 1) × 8 is 800 − 8, not 800 − 1, because all eight lots lose one. The page prints both blanks — the round part and the correction — so a child has to write the 8 and cannot skip it.

How this one works

999 × 7=(1000 − 1) × 7
(1000 − 1) × 7=7000 − 7
7000 − 7=6993
  1. Write the number as a round number take away a little, then multiply both parts.
  2. Work out the easy part first: (1000 − 1) × 7 = 7000 − 7.
  3. Then finish: 7000 − 7 = 6993.
