A discount takes a percent OFF the price, and the sale price is what is left. These free printable word-problem worksheets give a price and a percent off and ask for the sale price — built so every answer is a whole dollar.
Two ways lead to the same sale price, and both are worth knowing. Find the discount — a percent of the price — and subtract it; or notice that 25% off means paying 75%, and take that percent straight away. The first is the safer first method and the one the answer key shows; the second is the shortcut a child grows into.
Why this sheet works
The mistake the sheet is built to catch is stopping at the discount and writing it as the answer. The question asks for the SALE PRICE, what you actually pay, so the discount has to be taken OFF the original — the opposite direction from tax. Doing tax and discount near each other is the best way to feel that difference.
