What's on this sheet

One percent is the way in. If 12 is 25%, then one percent is 12 ÷ 25, and the whole — a hundred percent — is a hundred of those. Going through one percent turns "find the whole" into two small steps a child can hold, instead of a proportion to set up and cross-multiply.

Why this sheet works

It is the third corner of percent-of-a-number, and the one that catches a child who has only practised the other two. Find the part: given the percent and the whole. Find the percent: given the part and the whole. Find the whole: given the part and the percent — this sheet. Meeting all three is what makes the relationship, rather than three separate tricks.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

81 is 15% of a number.

81÷15=5.4
5.4× 100 =540
  1. 81 is 15%, so one percent is 81 ÷ 15 = 5.4.
  2. The whole is 100%, so multiply by a hundred: 5.4 × 100 = 540.
