Most division stories a child meets share out evenly, and then real life does not. These free printable word problems share a pile that will not divide cleanly and ask the two questions that follow: how many each, and how many are left.
A remainder is where a child first has to read what the story wants done with the leftover. Twenty-five pencils shared among four children is six each with one over — but twenty-five children fitting four to a car needs seven cars, not six, because the one left over still has to travel. The arithmetic is identical; the answer is not, and deciding which is the whole point of the page.
Why this sheet works
Keeping the numbers small keeps the attention on that decision. A child who can already divide within the tables is not learning to divide here — they are learning that a division has two parts, the quotient and the remainder, and that the story says which one is the answer.

Read it through once. Something is shared or grouped equally, so it is a division — 25 ÷ 3. The catch is that it does NOT come out even, and what to do with the bit left over is the whole question.
Find the most whole groups that FIT without going over: 8 × 3 = 24, and one more would be 27, which is past 25. So 8 is as far as it goes.
Now what is left over: 25 − 24 = 1. That leftover is too small to make another group — it is the REMAINDER. Written together, 25 ÷ 3 = 8 R 1.
The question asks how many are LEFT OVER, so the answer is the remainder — the 1, not the 8: 1 cupcake.
