Square roots worksheets

A square root asks which number, multiplied by itself, gives this one. These free printable worksheets use perfect squares only, so every answer is a whole number and the question is recall rather than estimation.

What's on this sheet

√144 = 12 because 12 × 12 = 144, and saying it that way keeps the root tied to the multiplication it undoes. Children who meet roots as a button on a calculator often cannot say what the answer means; children who have learned the squares to 25 can answer most of a page from memory.

Why this sheet works

The squares themselves are the thing worth knowing. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and onwards is a short list, it is the same list that makes the Pythagorean theorem workable, and reading it aloud a few times does more for this topic than any amount of working out.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

√121

√121=
11 × 11=121
11 × 11=121
√121=11
  1. √ asks a question: which number times itself gives 121? It is not an instruction to halve 121 — that is the mistake this symbol collects.
  2. That number is in the times table: 11 × 11 = 121.
  3. So √121 = 11.
