What's on this sheet

Splitting the bottom number is the whole idea. 34 × 26 is 34 × 6 plus 34 × 20, so the sheet asks for two multiplications and then their sum. The first row multiplies by the ones digit, the second row multiplies by the tens digit, and adding the two gives 204 + 680 = 884.

Why this sheet works

The step that trips children is the second row. Because that digit is really twenty, not two, the whole partial product shifts one place to the left; many write a zero in the ones column first to hold the place, then multiply. Skip that shift and the two rows add up in the wrong columns — the single most common two-digit-by-two-digit mistake, and the reason this skill gets its own sheet.
