Draw scale pointers worksheets

A kitchen scale shows a weight as a place around a circle. These free printable worksheets give six weights and six dials with no pointer, and the child draws a pointer from the middle to the right mark. An answer sheet shows each one drawn in.

What's on this sheet

Each dial runs from 0 to 1 kg with a numbered mark every 100 g. The numbers climb around the face, up one side and down the other, so 500 g sits at the top and 900 g sits low on the right. That is the hard part of a dial. Height says nothing here, and a child has to follow the marks round to find where a number is.

Why this sheet works

Drawing the pointer also makes the direction plain. It starts at the dot in the center and ends at one mark, which leaves no doubt about which number the child meant. A pointer that goes to the wrong side of the dial is usually a child who looked at the height of the number instead of following the order, and it is quick to see that on a marked page.

How this one works

Point the needle

goes up to:1000g
gaps:10
one gap:100g
100g per gap
900 ÷ 100 =9 gaps
100g per gap
900 ÷ 100 =9 gaps
9 gaps from zero = 900g
  1. The dial reads round to 1000g, shared over 10 equal gaps — so one gap is 100g.
  2. How many of those gaps make 900g? 900 ÷ 100 = 9.
  3. Turn the needle 9 gaps on from zero.
