Starting at the thousands, a child divides that place, multiplies back, subtracts, and brings down the hundreds — then does it again for the tens and the ones. The same four moves, four times, is the whole method.
Every dividend is built as divisor × quotient, so the answer is always exact — 3724 ÷ 4 is 931 with nothing left over. Remainders are deliberately left out so the focus stays on the rhythm and on keeping the columns straight, which is where four-digit division usually goes wrong. When a place will not divide, the quotient takes a zero there and the child brings the next digit down — a step worth meeting on clean numbers.
