4-digit by 1-digit long division worksheets

By four digits the algorithm becomes a loop. These free printable worksheets set a four-digit dividend over a single-digit divisor — 3724 ÷ 4 — so the divide, multiply, subtract, bring-down cycle runs four times over, once for each place, every quotient landing on a whole number.

What's on this sheet

Each sheet prints the long-division house with a four-digit dividend inside and one divisor outside, laid out in tall rows with room to carry the work all the way down. Starting at the thousands, a child divides that place, multiplies back, subtracts, and brings down the hundreds — then does it again for the tens and the ones. The same four moves, four times, is the whole method.

Why this sheet works

Every dividend is built as divisor × quotient, so the answer is always exact — 3724 ÷ 4 is 931 with nothing left over. Remainders are deliberately left out so the focus stays on the rhythm and on keeping the columns straight, which is where four-digit division usually goes wrong. When a place will not divide, the quotient takes a zero there and the child brings the next digit down — a step worth meeting on clean numbers.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

6210 ÷ 3

2070 36210 621210
  1. 6210 shared into groups of 3. Long division starts at the LEFT — the other way round from adding.
  2. Start at the left. How many 3s fit into 6? 2 of them — write the 2 on top. 2 × 3 = 6, and 6 − 6 leaves 0. Bring down the 2, which makes 2. 3 does not go into 2, so a 0 goes on top; bring down the 1, which makes 21.
  3. How many 3s fit into 21? 7 — write it on top. 7 × 3 = 21, and 21 − 21 leaves 0. Bring down the 0, which makes 0. 3 does not go into 0, so a 0 goes on top.
  4. Nothing is left to bring down and nothing is left over. 6210 ÷ 3 = 2070.
