Elapsed time worksheets

Reading a clock and using one are different skills. These free printable sheets are the second: how long between two times, what time it will be after an interval, and what time it began, with an answer key.

What's on this sheet

Crossing the hour is the whole difficulty, and it is dealt on purpose. 3:15 plus thirty minutes is two easy additions side by side and teaches nothing a number line did not; 3:45 plus thirty is the question — the minutes pass sixty, an hour carries, and base sixty stops being a detail. Questions that cross and questions that do not are drawn as separate groups, so a page never fills with the comfortable kind.

Why this sheet works

Intervals move in five-minute steps, which is how a clock face is read. A thirty-seven-minute jump is arithmetic practice wearing a clock; five, ten, twenty, forty-five are the intervals a child can find by counting round the dial, which is what they should be doing at this stage.

How this one works

7:20 to 7:45

7:207:257:307:357:407:45 7:20
  1. From 7:20 to 7:45. Count FORWARDS rather than taking one from the other — then nothing has to be borrowed and the hour never bites.
  2. It all sits inside the one hour, so there is nothing to cross: 25 minutes straight through to 7:45.
  3. Add the hops up: 25 — that is 25 minutes.
