The child follows the minute hand first to find 00, 15, 30, or 45, then checks where the shorter hand sits between the hour numbers and writes the matching digital time.

- Two hands, and they are read on two different scales — so take them one at a time, short hand first.
- The short hand has passed the 11 and has not reached the 12, so the hour is 11. It does not sit exactly on a number, and it is not supposed to — it creeps along all hour.
- Now the long hand, pointing at the 3. That 3 is an HOUR number — for minutes each one is worth five, so count round in fives: 5, 10, 15.
- Hour 11, minutes 15 — 11:15.
