What's on this sheet

Adding an interval to a time is easy until the minutes pass sixty, and that carry is the whole point. 3:15 plus thirty minutes is 3:45 and teaches little; 3:45 plus thirty is where an hour carries and base sixty stops being a detail. Questions that cross the hour and questions that do not are drawn as separate groups, so a page never fills with the comfortable kind.

Why this sheet works

Intervals move in five-minute steps a child can count round the dial — five, ten, twenty, forty-five — rather than a thirty-seven-minute jump that is only arithmetic wearing a clock. Counting up to the next whole hour first, then adding the rest, is the method the page is built to reward.

How this one works

One question from this sheet, worked through a step at a time.

10:40 + 90 min

10:4511:0011:1511:3011:4512:00 10:40
  1. It starts at 10:40 and runs for 90 minutes. Hop forwards along the line rather than adding the digits — then the hour never has to be carried.
  2. 20 minutes takes it to 11:00 — the next o'clock.
  3. 1 whole hour takes it to 12:00. Whole hours never disturb the minutes.
  4. And the last 10 minutes.
  5. So it ends at 12:10.
