About this chart
Ten is the hinge of our number system, and knowing its pairs by heart is what lets a child add 8+5 by making ten first and carrying the rest. There are only eleven bonds to learn, and this chart shows each one twice over: as a number sentence, and as a row of counters split into two colours.
The counters matter. A child who is still counting on their fingers can match the picture, count the two colours, and arrive at the fact honestly. As the pairs become familiar the picture stops being read and the numbers take over, which is exactly the handover a chart like this is for.
Read the chart top to bottom and one side grows as the other shrinks — the seesaw that shows why the pairs come in twos. Once ten is secure, the same picture works for making twenty, and the number bond worksheets here move up to it.
