A beaker turns volume into something a child can see. This printable worksheet shows six 1-liter beakers filled to different levels and asks how much liquid each one holds, in milliliters.

What's on this sheet

Every beaker is drawn with straight sides, which is what makes the scale honest: in a vessel that does not taper the height of the water really is proportional to the volume, so evenly spaced marks mean equal amounts and a level halfway up is genuinely half a liter. The child reads the flat surface of the water against the graduations and writes the amount, the same way they would read a thermometer or a ruler.

Why this sheet works

The six beakers use different levels across the range rather than clustering near the top, and the water always stops on a printed mark so there is an answer to find rather than one to estimate. Ten graduations to the liter keeps each step a round hundred milliliters — small enough to need counting, large enough that a first attempt is not a guess. The separate answer page prints each amount beside the same beaker so an adult can mark the sheet at a glance.

  1. Work out one gap before anything else. The jug goes up to 1000ml, shared over 10 equal gaps — so one gap is 100ml. Not one — that is the assumption this whole topic is built to break.
  2. Read at the BOTTOM of the curve the liquid makes, not at its edges — the water climbs the sides a little and the middle is the true level.
  3. Count the gaps up to it: 8. Now count those gaps in 100s — 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 — so it reads 800ml. Counting the marks alone would have given 8, which is the wrong answer that looks right.
