What's on this chart

Those two questions are the two halves of most of the arithmetic in grades four to six, and only one of them had a chart. A child hunting the least common multiple of 8 and 12 writes out both lists by hand, gets to 24 in one and 24 in the other, and has spent the whole question on the listing rather than on the comparing. Here the lists are already written and the answer is where two rows first agree.

Why this chart helps

That is also how fractions with different bottoms get added. To turn thirds and quarters into something that can be combined, a child needs a number both denominators reach — read the 3 row and the 4 row across, find 12 in both, and the common denominator has been found rather than guessed at. The chart makes the two operations visibly the same operation, which is worth more than either one on its own.
